ISLAMABAD: An accountability court in Islamabad on Friday resumed the hearing of the Avenfield properties reference against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and members of his family.
Accountability Judge Muhammad Bashir is hearing final arguments of Mr. Sharif’s lead counsel Khawaja Haris.
He began his concluding arguments in the case on Tuesday.
The former premier and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are not in attendance as they are in London owing to the illness of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.
A day earlier, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) reserved its verdict on a petition filed by Mr. Sharif seeking directives for the trial court to announce its decision in all three NAB references against him simultaneously.
A bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani reserved the verdict after hearing arguments.
Lawyers Azam Nazir Tarrar and Amjad Pervez appeared on behalf of the Sharif family.
Nazir argued that the accountability judge recorded the testimonies of similar witnesses separately in the three references, which is tantamount to depriving his client of his fundamental rights.
NAB Prosecutor Sardar Muzaffar contended that defence lawyer Khawaja Haris had already began presenting arguments in one reference, therefore the petition has become invalid.
He said that all the three references were different and pleaded that the petition be dismissed.
Nawaz and his family members are facing three corruption references including Avenfield Properties, Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Flagship Investments.
