RAWALPINDI: Erstwhile prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi appeared before an election tribunal on Monday for the hearing of an appeal challenging his nomination papers for NA-57 Murree constituency.

Abbasi is contesting on two seats of the National Assembly in the upcoming election on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) ticket, from NA-53 and his home constituency of Murree NA-57.

However, his nomination papers submitted for the Murree constituency, have been challenged in the Rawalpindi appellate tribunal.

Petitioner Masood Ahmed Abbas had challenged Abbasi’s candidature on the accusations of extorting money from the national exchequer. The petition further alleged that Abbasi intentionally damaged national security by endorsing the anti-state remarks given by PML-N’s supreme leader Nawaz Sharif.

Among other allegations, the petitioner had claimed that former premier did not provide correct details of his assets.

The appellate tribunal had earlier suspended the returning officer for not properly screening the nomination papers of Mr. Abbasi.

The election tribunals have time to decide on the appeals against approval or rejection of the nomination papers till June 27. The election commission will display the revised list of the candidates on June 28.

Polling for the general election 2018 will be held on July 25.
