- APML president nominated as new chairman
- Former military ruler to remain party supremo
ISLAMABAD: Former military ruler General (r) Pervez Musharraf has stepped down as chairman of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), party’s president Dr Mohammad Amjad told a private media outlet on Friday.
Dr Amjad said that Musharraf has sent his resignation to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as it “was no longer possible for the former president to run the party from abroad”.
Earlier this week, the ECP had rejected Musharraf’s nomination papers for NA-1 Chitral following the suspension by the Supreme Court (SC) of its interim verdict permitting the former president to submit his nomination papers for the general elections after he failed to appear before the court
Dr Amjad further said that he was nominated as the new chairman of APML; however, despite Musharraf’s resignation, he will remain the party supremo.
According to a private media outlet, the party has forwarded a formal request to the ECP notifying about the change in its chairmanship.
Musharraf founded APML in 2010. Despite the party announcing the boycott of the 2013 election just days before the balloting, two of its candidates still contested and won two seats from Chitral.
