LAHORE: A local court here on Friday granted interim bail to notorious encounter specialist Abid Boxer in as many as 10 criminal cases.
The court approved bail for the former police officer till August 4 against a surety of Rs1, 00,000 in each case.
Some of the cases registered against him pertained to murder, attempted murder and land-grabbing.
Earlier this week, the authorities informed the Lahore High Court that Boxer has been in their custody since February this year.
Deputy Attorney General Syed Zafar Abbas Gilani told the court that former police officer, who was involved in many criminal acts, has been brought back to Pakistan from Dubai in February.
Justice Anwarul Haq of the LHC directed the authorities concerned to produce him in court on July 27.
Earlier this year, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and police had shown ignorance about the whereabouts of the former cop in their replies submitted to the court.
In February, it was reported that the notorious encounter specialist has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in connection with a fraud case and extradited to Pakistan through Interpol. However, the official word was that he has not been taken into custody.
Boxer’s father-in-law petitioned the high court, fearing that the former cop might be killed in an encounter.
He stated that his son-in-law has been handed over to Pakistani authorities after his arrest by Interpol at Dubai Airport and pleaded that he may be provided security and protection.
