WASHINGTON: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi is set to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday.
The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations and regional security issues, including the conflict in Afghanistan. Qureshi is also expected to hold a meeting with US National Security Adviser John Bolton on the same day.
Qureshi and Pompeo met last month during the latter’s visit to Islamabad with both sides agreeing to ‘reset’ bilateral relations.
“(We) wanted to get out there at the beginning of his time in an effort to reset the relationship between the two countries,” said Pompeo with regards to the visit to Pakistan and meetings with the newly-elected government.
Pompeo had invited Qureshi for talks in Washington during his visit to the country.
“Pakistan says now that it wants to turn a new page that it wants to help the US with this objective (Afghan reconciliation) that I outlined. And we’ll have to see,” said US Special Advisor for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad last week.
Last week, the Pakistani foreign minister, who is in the US to speak at the United National General Assembly, also met with US President Donald Trump.
“I met with President Trump at the reception where I had the opportunity to discuss Pak-US relations with him. I requested him to rebuild the cordial relations that we have enjoyed in the past,” said Qureshi.
