SC summons energy, finance ministers in Nai Gaj Dam case

ISLAMABAD: The ministers for energy and finance in addition to the secretary cabinet were summoned to appear on January 15 by the Supreme Court on Friday.

The directive was made as a two-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar resuming hearing of a case regarding Nai Gaj Dam construction.

“During a meeting of the Planning Commission’s Central Development Working Party (CDWP) the construction of the dam was recommended to the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC),” the additional attorney general informed the bench as proceedings began.

“This matter will remain pending before the ECNEC. I wanted this matter to be resolved before my retirement, however, some wishes just remain wishes,” the top judge remarked.

“One week is left. Justice Nisar is retiring on January 17,” Justice Ijazul Ahsan added.

The ministers for energy and finance and the secretary cabinet were then summoned by the apex court. Further, the top court ordered CDWP meeting minutes to be submitted to the SC on January 14.

In September last year, the top court had accepted a petition regarding construction of the dam.

Last month, the apex court directed three federal ministers to submit a time-frame for the construction of the Nai Gaj Dam project. The CJP had directed the government to take all stakeholders on-board and warned that any delay in water and health related issues will not be tolerated. Lack of funding for the project has delayed the construction of the dam in Sindh.
