PESHAWAR: Pak Development Mission (PDM), a nongovernmental organisation working for women empowerment in Pakistan, has approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) against the decision of a Peshawar district’s administration to bar it from holding a bicycle rally for transgender people and women.

PDM has filed a petition in the PHC requesting it to help hold the event by declaring the act of the district administration illegal.

The NGO asked the court to order the government and the administration to provide security to organise the ‘Cycle Rally for Transgender and Females’ on March 8, the International Women’s Day.

It prayed the court to direct the authorities to take strict action against those threatening the event.

The petitioner said the local administration had granted permission on January 11 for the event, which was later revoked.

Earlier, the bicycle rally was scheduled for Jan 19 in Hayatabad, Peshawar, but it was cancelled after leaders and residents of the area objected to it and announced to stage a protest near the venue of the event demanding from the administration to ban it.

In January 2016, women staged motorcycle rally in Lahore after completing bike riding training.

The program named ‘Women on Wheels’ aimed to motivate the women of Pakistan and to end the stereotype towards the females.
