Following the counter-attack by Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in which two Indian MiG-21 aircraft were downed, the Indian government on Thursday replaced the Western Air Command chief Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar and appointed him as the new chief of Indian Air Force’s sword arm Western Air Command (WAC).
The new Indian Air Marshal took part in Kargil War against Pakistan, reported NDTV.
The decision came out after Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on February 27 conducted strikes across the LoC from Pakistani airspace and shot down two Indian MIG-21 aircraft that had crossed the de-facto border and captured an Indian pilot, which was later identified Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman.
The WAC is headquartered in New Delhi and controls the area from north of Bikaner in Rajasthan up to Siachen Glacier and controls almost 40 per cent of the air bases of the Indian Air Force.
